Breast
implant surgery (breast augmentation) is one of the most popular cosmetic
procedures today. The surgery is performed to enlarge small underdeveloped
breasts or breasts that have decreased in size.
A variety of breast implants are available and can be categorized by:
surface feel (smooth vs. textured), shape (round vs. teardrop) and content
(saline vs. cohesive gel). The most commonly used breast implants are
smooth round saline implants. These breast implants have a silicone
shell and are filled with saline (saltwater solution). The cohesive
gel breast implants are filled with a silicone gel. The surgeon will
help you decide the best type of breast implants for you.
Who
Is A Good Candidate?
Any healthy person 18 years of age or older is a good candidate for
breast implant surgery (breast augmentation). They should have no history
of breast cancer or active breast infection. Women who are pregnant
or nursing are also not eligible for breast implant surgery (breast
augmentation).
The
Surgery
As a day surgery breast implant surgery (breast augmentation) is performed
in our fully equipped surgery center under intravenous sedation. An
incision (choice of around the nipple, under the breast fold, or in
the armpit) is made and a pocket is created under the breast tissue
or under the pectoralis major muscle. The breast implants are then inserted
and filled to the appropriate size. If the breast skin sags as well,
the surgeon may suggest having a breast lift along with the breast implants.
The patient will have pain, swelling and bruising after breast implant
surgery (breast augmentation). The patient is advised to take off work
for 7 days. The final results are apparent at 3 months after breast
implant surgery (breast augmentation).
